The Project Development Objectives have been substantially achieved with the following results and outcomes: a. Approximately 224km of road sections along the Northern Corridor and Tanzania-Kenya-S. Sudan road corridor has been reconstructed or constructed resulting in a reduction in travel time and cost. In the same light, seven interchanges have been constructed at major junctions (with a history of high fatalities), thus improving road safety and reducing congestion at these intersections. Also, social infrastructure and services (e.g. schools, markets and health facilities) have been provided to the project host communities and over 200 graduate engineers have been offered internship opportunities on the road contracts as part of human capital development in the sector. b. Kenya and JKIA attained aviation security and safety standards (Category 1) set by International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), Federal Transportation Administration, and Transportation Security Administration of the USA thus allowing flights originating from JKIA to and from the USA. Kenya Airways commenced direct flights to New York, USA on October 28, 2018. Other resulting outcome include the selection of JKIA as the fifth best airport in Africa in 2017, and the Most Improved Airport in Africa in 2016 (Airports Council International). c. Similarly, the East Africa School of Aviation (EASA) has been accredited as one of the few centers of excellence in the world by ICAO while the purchase and installation of air navigation equipment has contributed to enhanced safety in Kenya’s airspace. d. JKIA international passenger terminal facilities were restored speedily thereby avoiding adverse impact on Kenya’s tourist industry and the economy at large. e. Strengthening the capacity of KAA in disaster preparedness and responsiveness at Kenyan airports with the development of disaster response systems and the purchase of firefighting equipment. f. The regulatory frameworks for the construction industry (National Construction Industry) and engineering profession and practice (Engineers Board of Kenya) established as wells as a lead agency on road safety. A regulatory framework for railways developed awaiting adoption by GoK. Meanwhile, KCAA has been restructured through internal separation of the regulatory responsibilities from service provision functions and a performance monitoring framework for the maritime sub-sector developed and in use. Finally, a Marine Training Institute (MTI) has been established at Kisumu. g. The few outstanding activities will be funded by GoK to ensure effective completion including some road sections such as Athi River- Machakos turnoff.
