The World Bank Report No: ISR13030 Implementation Status & Results Kiribati Kiribati Grid Connected Solar PV Project (P121878) Public Disclosure Copy Operation Name: Kiribati Grid Connected Solar PV Project (P121878) Project Stage: Implementation Seq.No: 1 Status: ARCHIVED Archive Date: 04-Jan-2014 Country: Kiribati Approval FY: 2013 Product Line: GEF Medium Sized Program Region: EAST ASIA AND PACIFIC Lending Instrument: Specific Investment Loan Implementing Agency(ies): Public Utilities Board Key Dates Board Approval Date 12-Mar-2013 Original Closing Date 31-Dec-2016 Planned Mid Term Review Date Last Archived ISR Date Effectiveness Date 18-Jun-2013 Revised Closing Date 31-Dec-2016 Actual Mid Term Review Date Project Development Objectives Project Development Objective (from Project Appraisal Document) The project objective is to contribute to reducing Kiribati's dependence on imported petroleum for power generation in order to improve energy security and to reduce the GHG emissions from diesel fuel use for grid electricity supply in Kiribati. The specific objective of the proposed MSP is to serve as a catalyst for the substitution of the diesel based electricity generation for the South Tarawa grid by grid-connected solar PV supply of electricity. Has the Project Development Objective been changed since Board Approval of the Project? Yes No Component(s) Component Name Component Cost Investment in Grid Connected Solar Photovoltaic Equipment 3.40 Maintenance Program and Capacity Building 0.15 Project Management 0.36 Overall Ratings Public Disclosure Copy Previous Rating Current Rating Progress towards achievement of PDO Satisfactory Overall Implementation Progress (IP) Moderately Satisfactory Overall Risk Rating Moderate Implementation Status Overview While there have been some minor delays in the initial stages of implementation, overall progress is not expected to be significantly affected. Preliminary steps are underway to allow installation of the project's planned 500 kilowatts of photovoltaic generation capacity in South Tarawa to begin by mid-2014. It is understood that another project, to be funded through the United Arab Emirates, is also being considered for the South Tarawa grid system. The World Bank is concerned that Page 1 of 4 The World Bank Report No: ISR13030 this additional solar PV capacity (without storage) when combined with the World Bank project and the proposed Pacific Environment Community project (400kW) will exceed the limits established by the feasibility study for gird connected solar photovoltaic (without storage) in 2012.
