The project will support over half a million public school students in 637 secondary schools, over 7,000 teachers and school administrators and will strengthen the capacity of district, state and education institutions. The targeted improvements in schools (measured by project-administered standardized student tests) has been exceeded with 90% of the schools showing improvement compared to the end of project target of 40%). In 2014 , the West Africa Senior Secondary Certificate Examination (WASSCE) English pass grade was 85% improving from 41 % in 2009 ( compared with the end of project target of 45%). The pass grade Page 1 of 7 The World Bank Report No: ISR16311 improved from 57% to 84% and 52% to 85% in Mathematics and Biology respectively. Results from the 2014 WASSCE exams showed that the percentage of students with five credit passes including English and Mathematics in WASSCE has increased from 18% in 2009 to 45.86% in 2014. An initial analysis of Junior Secondary School Exams showed substantial improvement in passing grade in all the three subject areas in 2014 compared to the 2009 baseline data. Public Disclosure Copy The Project has continued to make strong progress in the distribution of school grants, with 100% of all secondary schools receiving their grants within the stipulated period (including eleven schools with facilities to accommodate individual with disabilities). A total of 7,998 individuals participated in the leadership training for principals and school district administrators, exceeding the appraisal target of 1,706 by over 400%. The number of district level staff trained has also exceeded end of project targets (1,643 compared to target of 693). Moreover, the Project exceeded target for teacher training in English, Mathematics and Science—training 16,832 teachers (compared to target 5,385). An additional 25,455 teachers were trained under the school grants ( a significantly greater number than the original target of 1,615 teachers). All the five targeted national and international public-private partnerships (PPP) have been completed and put into use. The project has also disbursed 22% from the additional finance funds within two months of effectiveness.
