The project was approved on September 30, 2016, it became effective on October 21, 2016 and its extended closing date is December 31, 2019. Under Component 1, the project has been financing the following sub-projects: 1 . Bhutan: "Capacity Building on REDD+ Readiness for Forest Dependent Communities of Buli, Zhemgang", implemented by Royal Society for Protection of Nature (RSPN). The sub-grant agreement was signed on September 5, 2017, and the activities were completed on July 31, 2018. It was extended with additional resources under the additional financing, looking at a thematic expansion in the same project area: feasibility study on eco-tourism; baseline study on biodiversity, agricultural yield towards impact of non-carbon benefits; forest resources assessment. 2 . Bhutan: "Capacity Building for REDD+ in Rural Bhutan", implemented by Tarayana Foundation. The sub-grant agreement was signed on September 11, 2017, and the activities were completed on June 30, 2018. It was extended with additional resources under the additional financing with a geographic expansion of the sub-project to four districts - Dagana, Samtse, Tsirang and Wangdue. 3 . Fiji: "Building Capacity for Fiji’s Forest Dependent Indigenous Men and Women to Actively Participate in the Fiji REDD+ Readiness Program", implemented by Soqosoqo Fiji Indigenous Women’s Society. The sub-grant agreement was signed on June 20, 2017, and it closed on July 31, 2018. 4 . Fiji: "Capacity Building on REDD+ for Forest-Dependent Indigenous (I Taukei) Peoples in Fiji", a new sub-project implemented by Grace Trifam. This sub-project presents a geographic expansion of the closed sub-project in Fiji into six local communities: 3 in Viti Levu, 2 in Vanua Lecu and 1 in Taveuni Island. 5 . Vanuatu: "Building the capacity of the Vanuatu indigenous forests dependent population to be aware of REDD+ and how they could adjust their socio-economic activities in order to enhance the carbon stocks and simultaneously adapt to impacts of climate change", implemented by the Vanuatu Forest Association (VFA). The sub-grant agreement was signed on September 28, 2017, and it closed on July 31, 2018 6 . Vietnam: "Hoa Binh Cooperative on Agro-Forestry and Environment Proposal to Build Capacity of Ethnic Communities for their Active Engagement in National REDD Processes", implemented by Hoa Binh Cooperative. The sub-grant agreement was signed on May 31, 2017, and the activities were completed on July 31, 2018. It was extended with additional resources under the additional financing to upscale and replicate capacity building activities with a geographic expansion in Thanh Hoa province, Nhu Xuan District, the communes of Cat Van, Thanh Lam, Hoa Quy and Xuan Quy. 7 . Vietnam: "Promoting collaborative approaches in forest management to reduce carbon emissions among forest-dependent households and forest management enterprises in Northern Central Coastal Region of Vietnam", implemented by the International Center for Tropical Highland Ecosystems Research (ICTHER). The sub-project was implemented as a consultancy, signed on February 19, 2018, and the activities were completed on July 31, 2018. It was extended with additional resources under the additional financing to promote and implement Adaptive Collaborative Management Approach to Reduce Carbon Emissions among Da Krong Protection Forest and forest-dependent households in Quang Tri Province. Under component 2, the project has financed: (i) a study on indigenous peoples’ customary tenure systems vis a vis state tenure systems, with country case studies for Fiji, Nepal, and Vietnam; (ii) a regional workshop for the sub-project recipients and other representatives of the 10 FCPF countries in the Asia-Pacific region, carried out in October 2018 in Bangkok. The Bangkok workshop facilitated knowledge sharing and exchange on lessons learned from the implementation of REDD+ capacity building sub-projects financed by the parent project, and experiences from activities financed by other sources; and (iii) a Training of Trainers on carbon accounting for IP representatives from Bhutan, Fiji, Indonesia, Nepal, the Philippines, and Vietnam, which provided theoretical and practical experience as well as training on how IPs could conduct carbon accounting in the future. The project is expected to close successfully on December 31, 2019. The mitigation measures proposed in the Project Paper, namely close monitoring and support by the World Bank, and ongoing communication with the FCPF community and REDD+ focal points, remain relevant and are being implemented.
