The Guide is currently being edited and will be released for publication shortly. The objective of the Guide is to promote good community engagement practices in the mining sector, which is part of the Ministry’s strategy to confront current challenges in the Page 1 of 3 The World Bank Report No: ISR13283 sector by promoting mining that is both socially and environmentally sustainable. The Ministry of Mining plans to disseminate the Guide widely and use it for training purposes. The good practices identified in the Guide will be shared with mining companies, public entities working in the sector, indigenous organizations and other civil society organizations, and the general public. The Guide will contribute to improving relations between mining Public Disclosure Copy companies and indigenous communities, so that investments in this sector are mutually beneficial. The Guide contains a variety of tools and practical advice on building healthy, lasting relationships with indigenous communities at the various stages of mining projects - exploration, design, construction, operation, closure and abandonment. The Bank expects that this work will support more responsible mining that is sensitive to the needs and interests of Chilean indigenous communities. While the key objectives of the grant have been achieved, the client has only been able to process one disbursement. The cost of producing the Guide was covered with client funds. The client has the documentation to process additional disbursements, but has been unable to do so due to technical issues.
