Disbursements are at US$229 million (38 percent) with projected disbursements of an additional US$95.6 million in the next 6 months January-June, 2019. For Component 1, physical progress is 53% percent for the signaling modernization of the Cairo-Alexandria line, and 42% percent for the Beni Suef- Asyut line. The Contractor for the Asyut-Nagh Hammadi line has mobilized and has initiated implementation; the contract was signed in January 2018. Implementation of Component 2 (Track renewal works along the Cairo-Aswan line) is now completed and the works have been successfully finalized. ENR continues to make progress in the implementation of Component 3 (Modernization of management and operating practices). The study for the reform of the railway sector is vital for the continuation of World Bank support to ENR and is expected to be finalized successfully as soon as possible, in the context of the general economic reform in Egypt. The High-Level (Multi-Ministerial) Working Group (HLWG) should be put in place or an alternative working model established to address the points raised by the study and to guide the gradual restructuring of the railway sector.
