No I. SUMMARY OF PROJECT STATUS AND PROPOSED CHANGES The World Bank Hwange-Sanyati Biological Corridor Project (P124625) The project rating is satisfactory and disbursements are at 94%. The extension is intended to facilitate the completion of key activities that cannot be finalized by the initial project close-out date of June 2019. This is partly because project implementation started 6 months after contract signing. The outstanding activities are: a. Facilitating the conduct of an end of project wildlife survey in and around Hwange National Park; b. Supporting the setting up and start-up of a Community Trust for Sidinda Wildlife Community Conservancy in Hwange district; c. Facilitating the first instalment of voluntary carbon trading in Ngamo and Sikumi gazetted forests; and, d. Supporting the finalization of a Land Restoration tool kit for Chireya communal area. Details of the extension request are below. 1. Facilitate the conduct of an end of project wildlife survey in and around Hwange National Park In 2017, the Zimbabwe Parks and Wildlife Management Authority recommended that the survey be integrated into a broader national survey that was scheduled for October 2018 under its overall supervision. Unfortunately, the mega survey was not carried out after the Authority failed to raise the requisite matching funds. However, the survey is critical as it provides wildlife population information at project close-out. Planned activities beyond June 2019 are: a. Validation of wildlife survey results with emphasis on Hwange National Park and its buffer areas; and, b. Integration of survey results into the Final Project Report. 2. Support the setting up and start-up of a Community Trust for the Sidinda Wildlife Community Conservancy in Hwange District. The following will be in place by end of June 2019: wildlife translocations completed with the exception of impala (currently dropping off-spring); community wildlife management structure for post-wildlife release operational, a private partner and a Community Conservancy business plan in place; and key elements of a Public-Private- Community-Partnership (PPCP) agreed upon by all parties. The following activities will be carried out post June 2019: a. Registration of Sidinda Community Conservancy Trust as a legal entity; b. Supporting initial operations of the Trust, including training of the Board & its Secretariat; c. Facilitating trans-location of outstanding wildlife species (impala) to Sidinda. c. Integrating Activity outcomes into the Final Project Report. 2.3 Facilitating first instalment of voluntary carbon trading in Ngamo & Sikumi gazetted forests. The following will be in place by end June 2019: The Project Design Document (PDD) containing project methodology, results and carbon cash flows and their distribution. The PDD will have been validated by a third party. Activities to be undertaken post June 2019 are: a. Registration of a validated PDD. This involves opening an account, submitting the PDD and making registration presentations; b. Identification and engagement of a broker to market and sell carbon credits. The broker will be paid from proceeds of the sale. Issuance of carbon credits will occur after verification of a monitoring report; The World Bank Hwange-Sanyati Biological Corridor Project (P124625) c. Supporting an equitable sharing of income from first instalment voluntary carbon trading; and, d. Incorporating outcomes of the voluntary carbon trading exercise into the Final Project Report. 2.4 Support the finalization of a land restoration tool kit and share its results with key stakeholders A Land restoration tool kit template embracing outcomes of four sub-project pillars (viz: technical, livelihood, policy and institutions) will be in place by end of June 2018. Activities to be undertaken post June 2019 are: a. Populating any remaining sections of the Land restoration tool kit template; b. Convening a national workshop to share and socialize results of the toolkit; and, c. Integrating Activity outcomes into the Final Project Report. II.
