Has the Project Development Objective been changed since Board Approval of the Program? Yes No FOREST PROTECTION & REFORESTATION (P087485) Global Environmental Objective (from Project Appraisal Document) The development objective is both local and global in nature; therefore the GEO is the same as the PDO. To date, the project has supported the environmental rehabilitation of approximately 33,000 ha of Irtysh Pine forest and revegetation of 48,000 ha in the Dry Aral Seabed, which is impressive given the areas' harsh climatic conditions. In addition, it is supporting sustainable resource-led grazing management in 168,000 ha of saxaul rangelands (surpassing the end of project target of 156,000 ha). Significant progress has also been achieved in enhancing fire fighting capacity in Semey Ormany, with comprehensive fire protection/management investments that include a forest fire control information system (FFCIS), enabling forest fire detection 5 – 25 minutes faster than human detection as well as much quicker response times. The FFCIS supported by the project is the first advanced fire control system to be implemented in CIS countries. Implementation of the Participatory Forest Management (PFM) and Rangelands subcomponent continues to gain momentum, and has involved local people in developing strategies in improved forest management and protection, and has increased employment of local people in forest seeding and planting. Five PFM councils in the Irtysh Pine Forests have been established, and works on 12 rangeland demonstration plots in the Kyzylorda project area have been completed.
