To date, the project has supported land improvements on approximately 38,500 ha in the Dry Aral Seabed and 21,285 ha in the Irtysh Pine forest. Significant progress has also been achieved in enhancing fire fighting capacity, with large equipment purchased, reconstruction of 9 lookout towers and 5 fire chemical stations (FCS) fully completed, and 3 additional FCS planned for completion. The Forest Fire Control Information System (FFCIS), supported by the project, is the first advanced fire control system to be implemented in Kazakhstan. Implementation of the Participatory Forest Management (PFM) and Rangelands subcomponent continues to gain momentum. 5 PFM councils in the Irtysh Pine Forests are functioning, and works on 12 demonstration plots in the Kyzylorda project area are completed with 8 more demo plots to be implemented this year. Loan disbursements since the last mission have increased from US$19.22 million (November 2011) to US$ 22.46 million or 75% of total loan funds.
