Has the Project Development Objective been changed since Board Approval of the Project? Yes No Component(s) Component Name Component Cost Power Plant 1836.00 Technical Assistance (TA) 0.55 Transmission Lines 35.00 Gas Pipeline 128.00 Overall Ratings Public Disclosure Copy Previous Rating Current Rating Progress towards achievement of PDO Satisfactory Moderately Satisfactory Overall Implementation Progress (IP) Moderately Satisfactory Moderately Satisfactory Overall Risk Rating Moderate Implementation Status Overview The implementation of the 3x750 MW Giza North Power Plant is progressing reasonably well despite the external disturbances and challenges. All procurement activities are completed with contracts signed. The construction of the Giza North power plant has suffered some delay but the first four gas turbines are in commercial operation. The changing and challenging social condition in the country and other factors have adversely affected the implementation schedule of the gas pipeline and power transmission line. The first 220 kV power transmission, capable of evacuating 1200 MW power, is now in operation. But the gas pipeline is expected to be in operation by around end of 2014. The commissioned Page 1 of 5 The World Bank Report No: ISR13916 gas turbines are now operating on solar oil to provide peaking power, helping mitigate the acute power shortage in the summer period and contribute to system reliability. A clear, transparent process for receiving, evaluating and addressing concerns and complaints is implemented under the project. A one page leaflet explaining in simple terms the grievance redress mechanism (GRM) was disseminated to neighboring communities. These helped manage the social issues well under the country's challenging conditions.
