To improve the protection of property and safety of people from flood events, the project is in the process of strengthening dikes and improving rivers and waterways with infrastructure and landscaping works. Construction schedules are on schedule. Implementation of participatory watershed management activities have been largely completed and the beneficiaries are highly satisfied; the integrated flood and environment Public Disclosure Copy management is well implemented, the MIS and the M&E system continues to work well. However, there are some areas need to be improved including: (i) slow review and acceptance of completed subprojects; (ii) slow provision of domestic counterpart funding; and (iii) slow procurement for the remaining contract packages. To date approximately 426,000 additional people (or over 99 percent of the project target of 426,300) are protected from flooding. The project has also constructed 80.16 km of wastewater and storm water collection pipelines which are now operating well. As a result, the annual reduction of wastewater discharged directly into rivers now measures 4.44 million tons, which compares favorably to the 2015 target of 2.38 million tons. To bring about sustainable land and water resources utilization, the project's watershed management component is implementing soil and water conservation and engineering measures as well as livelihood improvement activities aimed at farmers. To date annual soil erosion reduction amounts to 1 million tons, over 100% of project target of 898,000 tons. Participatory livelihood activities are implemented well and highly recognized by beneficiaries. Sustainability is being pursued with ongoing institutional strengthening activities.
