A very important milestone of this agenda has been the creation of a regional observatory, the Ibero-American Road Safety Observatory (OISEVI), to establish a reliable road accidents database and foster knowledge transfer mechanisms to assist countries in the region in setting up good practice data collection and management systems that Page 1 of 4 The World Bank Report No: ISR15031 will allow them over time to efficiently and effectively monitor their road safety performance. This initiative is focused to achieve a substantial challenge: the significant gap in technical capacities amongst member countries regarding collection, processing and publication of road safety data. This project aims at improving the performance of OISEVI and its member countries (Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, El Salvador, Spain, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Dominican Republic, Uruguay and Venezuela) , primarily of their data collection and analysis processes. The objective will Public Disclosure Copy be achieved through building institutional capacity by: collaborating in the collection of relevant data and baseline statistics; providing expert technical assistance to road safety agencies in LAC with weaker institutional and technical capacities; improving the training methodology of data coordinators from all member countries; and developing a scheme of information exchange in order to make more efficient the process by which information is sent to OISEVI's Executive Secretariat. The Public Disclosure Copy representatives confirmed the critical relevance of the Road Safety Agenda in Latin America, the strategic importance of the Observatory for knowledge exchange and mutual support, and the need for increased efforts for the institutional strengthening of the OISEVI.
