This Precis entitled, Fiscal management in adjustment lending, complements the Bank's Operations and Evaluation Department (OED), Operations evaluation study : Fiscal management in adjustment lending, Report No. 17043, dated June 30, 1997. The study confirms that fiscal deficit reduction leads to improved external balances and economic growth. But the process takes sustained, long-term effort, and continued vigilance against reversals.
