In Afghanistan, micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) account for 80 percent of business activity, but less than 5 percent use formal banking services, representing a 4.7 billion dollars financing gap. This Upstream Insight explores how a seed diagnostic uncovered upstream and mainstream opportunity in Shariah-compliant loan guarantees, which, although curtailed by political events in Afghanistan, yields findings applicable to other markets.
