This methodological report aims at presenting the current methodological concepts and techniques, which underlie the definition, delimitation, and analysis of the typology of human settlements one hand, and of functional urban areas, on the other hand. In addition to the existing methods, some variants of their adaptation are presented, depending on the availability of data and the extension of the targeted area.
