The population of Moldova is ageing and shrinking rapidly due to a combination of low birth rates, emigration, and rising life expectancy. The total fertility rate has halved from 2.6 in the mid-1980s to around 1.3 births per woman in the beginning of the 2000s and has since remained stable (World Bank 2021a).
