The authors present empirical evidence from household and firm survey data collected during 2009-2010 on how well the 2008 labor contract law has been implemented and what its impact has been on Chinese workers. The authors find evidence of substantial effort to enforce the provisions of the new law, and that this has helped to reverse a prior trend toward increasing informalization of the urban labor market.
