Energy consumption in Burundi is very low. Cooking accounts for about 90 percent of the country's energy needs, which are met mainly by wood charcoal and agricultural residues. Very little progress has been made in electrification of the country. The main problems in the energy sector are the shortage of woodfuels, procurement of petroleum products and the uncertain future supply of commercial energy, especially electricity.
