The paper examines changes in poverty and inequality in Madagascar between the years 2001 and 2005. During this period Madagascar's economic progress has been notable. Yet the record for poverty and living standards is mixed. Inequality has declined considerably, the depth of poverty has fallen by almost 25 percent, and income grew faster for the poor than the average. But poverty remains pervasive in Madagascar, with more than two thirds of the population...
